THE staging of this year’s Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet in Makato, Aklan scheduled February 15 to 21 is indefinitely postponed.
This was confirmed Tuesday, February 4, by Department of Education (DepEd) Negros Occidental chief education program supervisor and sports coordinator adding that the issue will be discussed tomorrow during the Regional ManCom meeting at the Acacia Hotel.
DepEd recently issued a memorandum stating that “in the interest of public health, to minimize exposure to risks associated with the 2019-nCov ARD (2019 novel coronavirus acute respiratory disease), and to support government efforts to contain the spread of the virus, the following shall be observed for DepEd activities for the month of February 2020. Thereafter, will seek the advice of DOH for recommendations regarding the precautionary measure.”
The memorandum further added that “all activities involving learners and teachers requiring travel and congregation of various schools, divisions and/or regions are suspended.”
Meanwhile, a report from a local news outfit in Iloilo claimed that the province of Antique will not send its delegation to the 2020 WVRAA because of the alleged presence of coronavirus is the Kalibo, Aklan.
“There is no confirmation yet as to this report. But, if that’s true then it’s their prerogative because of the situation. And, that could be decided by their DepEd division office and local government officials,” Sison said. “Anyway, DepEd Regional Office will not risk holding the WVRAA if the health and safety of the delegates are at stake,” he added.
Thousands of student-athletes, coaches and delegation officials are expected to converge in this annual sports undertaking.
DepEd has also postponed the 2020 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet slated this month in Dumaguete City due to the threat of the 2019-nCoV ARD.
