Oro’s hunt for foreign visitors with ‘flu symptoms’ ongoing

THE City Health Office (CHO) is coordinating with the Bureau of Immigration in Cagayan de Oro to identify foreign nationals who recently arrived in the city for them to be able to check if the visitors are exhibiting flu symptoms similar to that of the 2019 novel coronavirus acute respiratory disease (2019-nCoV ARD).

City Health Officer Dr. Lorraine Nery said the search will not only limit to Chinese but all foreign nationals who are in Cagayan de Oro.

“Of course, we still need to request from Immigration, it will go through a process, dili siya automatic nga hatagan dayon ta nila, makig-coordinate pa ta and we’ll see what happens,” Nery said.

The health office has already activated village health emergency response teams that will conduct surveillance in communities.

Nery said the response teams will look for people who are sick and who have been in contact with sick patients, and those who recently traveled abroad.

The City Government also activated on Monday a task force to strengthen its efforts against the virus from China.

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro Chamber president Robertino Pizzaro said the business sector is starting to feel the effect of the China virus, particularly those in the tourism and travel sector.

Pizzaro said they are “very cautious” because Chinese tourists are frequent visitors in the region.

However, Pizzaro said they remain hopeful that vaccine will be soon be available and that the health emergency will be over by March.
