THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD) is set to develop several in-house wells and will receive over 23,000 cubic meters of water per day from private bulk water providers in the first half of 2020.
MCWD has been securing additional volume of water to improve its service hours in areas where supply is no longer available.
“The water district is prioritizing in-house wells in areas where the demand for water is high since these are easy and fast to develop and are not easily affected by the dry spell,” said MCWD acting general manager Stephen D. Yee.
As part of its short-term solutions to the water scarcity, MCWD is also coordinating with local government units, non-government organizations and the private sectors for possible partnerships in developing groundwater wells.
The water demand in Cebu is projected to be at 580,000 cubic meters per day, while MCWD’s daily production is only at 233,000 cubic meters.
Decreasing trend
In January 2020, the MCWD production averaged at 223,000 cubic meters of water daily. The deficit of 10,000 cubic meters of water per day was due to the supply interruptions caused by power outages, leaks and MCWD’s preventive maintenance activities.
MCWD foresaw a decreasing trend in the daily production in February when the rainfall volume is expected to fall below the average as the summer season nears.
The in-house production wells are expected to yield a total of 3,000 cubic meters of water per day. It will benefit consumers in Barangays Sambag 1 and Capitol Site in Cebu City, Barangay Cubacub in Mandaue City and Barangay San Isidro in Talisay City.
Water delivery
MCWD said it is also expecting private bulk water suppliers to start delivering water to identified points by June 2020.
Mactan Rock Industries Inc. will deliver 10,000 cubic meters of water per day from its wells in Compostela, 2,000 cubic meters of water per day from its facility in Barangay Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City and Barangay Gabi, Cordova, and 3,000 cubic meters of water per day in Barangay Tejero, Cebu City.
MCWD promised that the supply will improve in the northern part of Metro Cebu when the Danao City Bulk Water Supply Project will start flowing either on the second or third quarter of 2020. This project is expected to deliver about 10,000 cubic meters of water per day.
The Danao City Government needs to lay an additional two kilometres of pipe to be able to deliver to MCWD’s injection point in Compostela. (PR)
