DENR personnel lead Guagua River cleanup

STAKEHOLDERS led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through its Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (Penro), led the cleanup of a river in Guagua town that serves as a major tributary of Manila Bay.

DENR PENRO Pampanga together with representatives from the DENR Central Luzon regional office and other PENR Offices of the region (Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Zambales and Aurora) led the cleanup drive.

The team was augmented by volunteers from the local government unit of Guagua headed by Mayor Dante Torres.

The activity was conducted in Barangay San Rafael, Guagua and along the Guagua River, where over 1.3 tons of wastes, including plastic bags, were collected.

The campaign was held a few days shy of the anniversary of the launching of the Manila Bay Rehabilitation on the same site. A noticeable improvement can be seen especially along the Guagua River, according to Penro Pampanga officer Salac.

According to Mayor Dante Torres there are signs of life as certain species of fish are now being caught on the said river. Also, 100,000 fingerlings of Tilapia fish have been released into the river to boost its population.
