Hardly vanilla

ONE fine Saturday, the halls of Jose T. Joya Gallery at University of the Philippines Cebu was decked with artworks showing the different sides of love just before Valentine’s Day. But instead of the usual forms of expressing love, each wall bared intimate acts done behind closed doors, things talked about in hushed tones, fantasies that may be too wild for most—the naughty and fun side of love.

This was “Hello Lo Lo Lo,” a one-day exhibit that took place last Feb. 1. Curated by published illustrator and lead designer Veronika V. Hipolito with the support of Jay Nathan Jore, it was a collaborative exhibition of artworks by local art group, The Lewdicrous with live performances.

Together with Hipolito, the artists who showcased their works were Kristine “The Drawer Kring” Demetrio, Jan Sunday, Wilbert Wee, Jodie Ferrer, Evalu Olivar, Madeleine Boone-Migallos and Maxcell Migallos Jr. as “Silk & Yew,” Karla Durangparang, Janot Autagab, Thirdy “Zar” Daligdig-Suralta, Kathryn Layno, Michael Punsalan, Dylan Thomas Briones, John Ellery “EJ” Negre and, SunStar Cebu’s Rolan John Alberto and John Gilbert Manantan.

The exhibit showed a playful and at the same time, daring display of sex. What is usually a topic talked over in secret, was staring audiences in the face and was freely open for discussion. More than that, the art exhibit further showed an exploration of the subject matter in both subtle and not-so-subtle ways.

“Through the lewd exhibition, I wanted the audience to be brave enough to share their love, passion and desires, for them to be expressive, not be shy when it comes to talking about their sensuality and for them to feel safe; that there is a community that accepts kinks and BDSM,” shared Hipolito.

Spoken word and poetry reading sessions also took place during the exhibit by guests Brent Esarza, Aly Evangelista and Jackson Stark, as well as live demonstrations by Pole Sphinx and Shibari Cebu. (Photos by Rolan John Alberto and Dexter Duran)
