DOTr to prohibit kids in front seats of cars

CLARK FREEPORT -- Children below 12 years old will no longer be allowed to sit in front of private cars next year once the Republic Act (RA) 11229, or the Child Safety in Motor Vehicles, is fully implemented, the Department of Transportation (DoTr) said.

The Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of RA 11229 has already been signed and approved.

The mandatory compliance of the law shall be enforced one year after its effectivity or the transitory period in February 2021.

This period will provide a sufficient time for information education campaign and preparation of concerned agencies.

The Child Safety in Motor Vehicles mandates the use of Child Restraint Systems or CRS for children below 12 years old on private motor vehicles.

The new law is expected to ensure the safety and welfare of child passengers, as well as prevent traffic-related deaths and injuries.

No child shall be allowed to sit in the front seat of a motor vehicle with a running engine.

For the public utility vehicles, the DOTr will conduct a study on the feasibility of requiring the use of CRS.

The agency stated that it will elevate the feasibility study to Congress. Otherwise, other necessary legislative measures for the safe and secure transportation of children in PUVs shall be recommended.

"Child safety is our priority. Keep your kids safe," the DOTr said.
