BTAO told to enforce ordinance vs distracted driving

THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution requesting the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) to strictly enforce the ordinance regulating the use of earphones while driving and crossing the street.

The resolution was authored by Councilor Simplicia Distrito.

Distrito said BTAO should strictly implement City Ordinance no. 592, series of 2012 which regulates the use of earphones while driving and crossing the street in the city.

She said the ordinance considers the use of earphones while driving as a form of distracted driving.

“It has been observed that a lot of our motorists plying the streets of the city are using earphones or headsets that impairs their sense of hearing while driving,” she said.

Distrito added that aside from motorists, pedestrians of all ages, particularly those roaming in the downtown and other business districts of the city, are seen using earphones while crossing or walking along the streets which is very dangerous.

The councilor urged BTAO to take the necessary action of apprehending these individuals not only that they violate our ordinance but also to ensure their safety.
