Psychological evaluation of students pushed

CAGAYAN de Oro City Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba said they will be sending a request to the Department of Education (DepEd) to require all public and private schools to conduct psychological tests once or twice a year.

This, in relation to the incident involving a grade 7 transferee student who "accidentally" shot his female batchmate last January 30 in Oro Christian Grace School.

Daba said since the schools have their guidance counselors, psychological exams should be mandatory to find out whether the students have tendencies or signs of depression and other mental health issues.

"In fact, mao man ang dapat buhaton gyud sa every school. Unsa may purpose for having a guidance counselor kung wala ni nga mga test, aside from the IQ test," Daba said.

"Especially kaning mga transferees nato, dapat close monitoring ang mga estudyante nga bag-o sa eskwelahan kay ok man tong gikan sa elementary paingon sa high school didto ra gyud sila nagdugay og eskwela, kaila naman gyud sila sa batasan sa estudyante more or less," she added.

Daba said transferee students, who are small in numbers, should be monitored. Students who are the subject of complaints should also be called in attention.

A technical working group, which includes the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the DepEd, will be working on the guidelines for all public and private schools to prevent an accidental shooting incident from happening inside school premises.

"Dili man nato ma deny naa gyud lapses ang Oro Christian Grace School when it comes to security," Daba said.

"It's supposed to be a safe place, second home for our children. So of course ang ginikanan very secured ang ilahang feeling nga pagsulod sa campus sa iyang anak, safe ang iyang ana. But only to find out nga napusilan. Unya wala pa gyud naareglar diretso," she added.

The DepEd, Daba said, will be the one to impose the penalties or sanction to the Oro Christian Grace School.
