Seares: Love like a seahorse

WHO’S at the door knocking at the city mayor’s office.

“Knock, knock.”

Mayor Edgar Labella: “Who’s there?”

Voice: “Mike Rama...”

Labella: “Mike Rama who?”

Voice: “Mike Rama xxx (inaudible) Mayor.”

Labella heard only “Mike Rama, Mayor.”

He missed the word “for.”

What Alcover can do

Former Cebu City councilor and Barug stalwart Jun Alcover may not actually have much ammunition against City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. But he sounds as if he has.

Only Casas and maybe Mayor Edgar Labella know how much damage Alcover can inflict if he’ll, ah, go wild.

Jun said he wouldn’t run for public office anymore. Few believe that, but does it mean he won’t be restrained anymore by inhibitions of a politician eyeing the next election?

Trump’s not insulted

If Filipino leaders wanted to return the “insult” of the United States in cancelling the visas of Sen. Bato de la Rosa and others in the State Department’s list of violators of human rights, the Americans are not insulted by the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the US.

“...I really don’t mind. If they would like to do that, that’s fine. We’ll save a lot of money,” President Trump was quoted as telling White House reporters.

Our leaders didn’t reckon Trump as the kind who would sweat over the loss of an agreement with a “developing” country, except probably if they had some dirt on his opponent next election.

Same virus, new name

They’re scrambling to come up with vaccine and medicine to tame it but it’s still raging out there: hospitalizing, quarantining, killing.

The enemy now has an official name: COVID-19. For Corona Virus Disease 19. World Health Organization (WHO) officials believe it will prevent the use of other names that can be “inaccurate or stigmatizing.”

WHO’s standard format, adopted in 2015, bans geographical location, an animal, or an individual or group of people, but still pronounceable and related to the disease. The tentative name, used in news stories for several days, followed the format: 2019 novel coronavirus or 2019 -nCoV. But it didn’t stop many people from using “Wuhan virus” to indicate its source or origin.

Do a love dance

You wouldn’t want to love like a seahorse, or would you?

A seahorse is monogamous and works diligently to keep the fire of love burning. Each start of day, the seahorse couple does a dance affirming love for each other. And a seahorse sticks to one partner for the rest of its life. If you can’t be faithful, you can still do a love dance.

But the life span of seahorses is short, “rarely more than three years.” Still, if a seahorse dies, the survivor doesn’t hook up with another partner too soon. Many die during the interval of waiting.

Or would you rather love like an octopus? Not uncommon for octopuses, which don’t see mating and eating as separate acts, to eat one another after love-making.
