Polio immunization reaches 97% coverage

THE Department of Health (DOH)-Northern Mindanao has hit a 97.79 percent immunization coverage on the second round of the region-wide Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio.

The DOH-Northern Mindanao started the second round of the polio mass vaccination last January 20 and ended it on February 2.

According to DOH Assistant Regional Director Dr. Dave Mendoza, of the target 584,000 children five years old and below, less than 20,000 children were not vaccinated.

Of the five provinces in the region, Lanao del Norte recorded the highest percent immunization coverage reaching 100.16 percent. This was followed by Misamis Occidental at 97.72 percent, Misamis Oriental at 96.63 percent, Bukidnon at 92.52 percent, and Camiguin at 86.46 percent.

Cagayan de Oro City, meanwhile, hit a 102 percent immunization coverage, vaccinating a total of 82,637 children five years old and below.

It was four percent higher than their percentage reached during the first round of the mass polio vaccination, which was 98 percent.
