Tell it to SunStar: Homeless senior citizens

YOUR report today (SunStar Cebu, Feb. 17, 2020) mentions that City Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr. has proposed an ordinance to set up a halfway house for homeless senior citizens.

He is correct in saying that “Almost in every part of the city there is an abandoned vagrant or homeless senior citizen.” Indeed, one wonders what the Social Welfare Department is doing regarding this blight, which is a shame for a city like ours, which boasts of malls, hotels and skyscrapers.

Does the Social Welfare and Development plead a lack of funds for its inability to help the countless vagrants who inhabit our streets?

One only needs to go Escario St. to find (ironically under a large tarpaulin showing Sen. Manny Pacquiao peddling an ointment) a couple who’ve set up a papag where they lie day in and day out. Right across from the Redemptorist Church (across KFC eatery) is a family of two bedraggled women and pitiful small children, including a chained dog, who occupy the sidewalk. And not far from the Mormon Temple on Escario St. sits a man on a milestone (or under a canvas tarpaulin when it rains) all day and night long.

Those are just a few examples which one hopes Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella will address instead of touting the phony “build, build, build” advocacy of this country’s wretched administration.
