Speedy construction of Kalibo airport quarantine facility sought

THE Municipal Council of Kalibo has urged the Department of Health (DOH) to hasten and prioritize the construction of the provincial quarantine facility at the Kalibo International Airport (KIA).

The KIA is considered a major gateway to Boracay Island where thousands of foreign and local tourists visit for holiday vacation.

Vice Mayor Cynthia Dela Cruz said she filed a resolution asking DOH-Western Visayas Director Marlyn Convocar and the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) about the project.

It was in 2018 when the DOH conducted the groundbreaking for the quarantine facility, reports said.

"Recently, residents of Kalibo have been alarmed with the ongoing threat of the coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19)," thus the need to prioritize the project, said Dela Cruz.

She added that "both the DOH and the BOQ are agencies mandated to protect the health of the people against the spread of diseases, particularly infectious diseases."

At present, the BOQ is on heightened alert against the possible entry of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Kalibo.

Terence Toriano, chief of the Municipal Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office, said that as of press time, the town remains free from ASF and Covid-19. (Jun N. Aguirre/SunStar Philippines)
