Tagum’s Lumangtad bags HS/college title

ALIYAH Rae Lumangtad of Tagum City emerged high school/college division champion of the recently-concluded APM Open Students Chess Tournament held at Damosa Market Basket in Lanang, Davao City.

Second seed Lumangtad tallied 4.5 points in the five-round Swiss System format competition, outclassing third seed Honey Grace Buenafe and top seed Wesley Jovan Magbanua, both of Jose Maria College, who placed second and third, respectively, the 15-player field.

Lumangtad subdued opponents Juan Ryu Bagonoc of Bukidnon, James Rhie Leigh Sullano of University of Mindanao (UM), Jasper Tambe Pantalita of Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) and Buenafe int eh first four rounds before she halved the point with Magbanua in the final and fifth round.

The elementary division title went to top seed James Catayas of Davao City who also earned 4.5 points after beating Princess Diana Simbajon, Yreil Josh Hernani, Yosef delos Reyes and Devon Artchel Lumangtad before drawing with Caerel Shane Mantilla.

Mantilla, for her part, edged two other 3.5 scorers Lumangtad and Namael Naetan Tapere via superior tiebreaks to place second. Lumangtad and Tapere took the next two places. (MLSA)
