Lizada: Senior privilege

WHEN I got my senior card, I was excited because of the discounts and benefits. I am one person who likes to eat and can you imagine what I can save and do with my 20 percent happiness. I get discounts with my medicine and domestic airfare also. I can move through lines with the speed of 60 and above. And it is a lot of fun having a senior card.

Unfortunately, there are seniors who are jerks. Seniors who should know better but do not. Let me say, not all because most the seniors I know do have manners but there are those who think that just because they are seniors they can act with such haughtiness that it can be downright shameful. And I have seen so many examples.

While I was waiting in line at some fast food restaurant, a senior in another line shoved her way through and loudly declared, "senior ako." But that was not all. She started complaining about how long the lines were and that this restaurant should have chairs and tables only for seniors. And she was practically shouting her senior mouth off.

It was just fortunate that most of the people in her line kept their quiet but you could see the expression on their faces and they were not positive. It was just too bad though she was not in my line because if she had we would have had a battle of the seniors. I would have stood my ground also.

Same thing happened at a grocery counter. A movie house. And a drugstore. Some people get to be so obnoxious and ill mannered. You give some people a few things and they act like they own the world and it gets to be more infuriating because these people are supposed to be the elderly who are supposed to be more wise and mature. I guess age is really not a sign of maturity or wisdom. I have seen younger people having more manners than some of these seniors.

A driving license is not something you use to justify your horrible driving skills. Same way that some motorcycle drivers blatantly defy common sense driving and it is no wonder why a lot of them meet daily accidents. You know what I mean. But that is also true with PUV and taxi drivers. Not to mention private vehicles drivers too.

There seems to be a penchant for abuse in this country. You give them a few privileges and benefits and the next thing you know, they are all over the place. Pedestrians cross through lanes while texting. Senior citizens demanding. Insane drivers weaving. And those are just common folk like you and me. Can you imagine what happens when you give some people wealth and power?

I just cannot wait to put a senior in his or her place.
