THE Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-Davao City Field Unit (CIDG-DCFU) warned business establishments illegally trading and refilling empty butane canisters with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to stop their illegal operation in Davao City.

CIDG-DCFU chief Police Major Milgrace Driz, on Wednesday, February 19, said they are coordinating with the Department of Energy (DOE) in conducting surveillance on stores that are accepting refilling services of butane, which poses danger and usually causes fire incidents due to leaked canisters.

Driz said butane has been widely used by different households for cooking because it is easy, lightweight, accessible, and cheaper at only P33 as compared to the LPG tank. She, however, appealed to the public not to patronize these unsafe energy products.

"We are also encouraging the community or even the Dabawenyos nga dili mogamit aning butane gani delikado ni siya. Maka-cause ug fire, maka-cause of explosion ug danger sa atong health (Do not use butane because it is dangerous. It can explode and poses health risk)," Driz said.

She added that butane is not authorized by DOE, thus, selling these products is prohibited. Also, DOE has been reminding traders to stop their illegal activities, otherwise, they will be apprehended.

"Padayon atong operation against butane kay we have known nga naay mga manufacturers ani although refilling stations. We have already conducted surveillance. As soon as possible, kung mabuo na nato, we will conduct operation (We are continuously conducting operation against butane. We have identified refilling stations under surveillance. We will launch an operation soon)," she said.

Driz also said they have already monitored several establishments selling these illegal items and they are in the process of gathering evidence for the filing of a case.

Suspects who will be apprehended will be charged with violation of the Presidential Decree (PD) 1865 or Illegal Trading of Petroleum Products.

PD 1865 prohibits illegal trading of petroleum and/or petroleum products; adulteration of finished petroleum products, or possession of adulterated finished products for the purpose of sale, distribution, transportation, exchange or barter and underdelivery or underfiling beyond authorized limits in the sale of petroleum products or possession of underfilled liquefied petroleum gas cylinder for the purpose of sale, distribution, transportation, exchange or barter, among others.
