2 new PUIs monitored in Eastern Visayas

HEALTH officials in Eastern Visayas have monitored two new patients under investigation (PUIs) for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) as of Saturday, February 22.

The first new PUI is a 42-year-old Filipino female from Southern Leyte with history of travel to Hong Kong and arrived in the country on February 11, 2020 via Cebu, and traveled back to her hometown in Southern Leyte last February 15, with no apparent complaint or symptoms.

She was home quarantined for five days under the monitoring of the Rural Health Unit, according to the Department of Health (DOH) in the region.

On February 18, the woman complained of body weakness and personally requested to be admitted in DOH’s referral hospital on the same date.

“On February 19, she had an episode of epigastric pain associated with one episode of vomiting, no fever and with normal vital signs. Currently, the patient is asymptomatic and is in good condition,” the health department said.

The second PUI is a 43-year-old Filipino female from Samar with history of travel to Hong Kong and arrived in the Philippines last February 17, 2020 with no complaint of symptoms.

The woman, who was previously reported as person under monitoring (PUM), was home quarantined for three days under the monitoring of the local health officials prior to her symptoms and later she developed a cough on February 19, and sore throat the following day, the DOH in the region said.

“On February 20, she was brought to the referral hospital for isolation and further management. The patient is currently experiencing mild sore throat,” it added.

Meanwhile, the health department said that based on the surveillance of their office there is a significant decrease of cases of PUI in the region for almost a week now.

“It shows that the Covid-19 health events are slowly declining all over the Philippines. However, the department will continue to do all interventions in mitigating and preventing the risk of infection and local transmission,” it said.

“The office is also in active collaboration with concerned agencies and local government units in terms of monitoring, reporting and identifying cases,” the health department said in a statement.

A total of 22 PUMs were recorded in Eastern Visayas, of which 11 are cleared and 11 is still under monitoring. (SunStar Philippines)
