Pangilinan: Tiinz Taruc’s Art and Heart

HERE in the Philippines, we celebrate Arts Month and Hearts Month each February. On the other side of the globe, a Kapampangan Filipino-American artist is mounting her eighth exhibition which opened last Friday, February 21, 2020. Tiinz Taruc, also known as Maria Cristina Taruc, of the famed Taruc clan, opens up her heart with her one-woman show “Pananaw ng Puso: Insights of the Heart at the FAGSI (Filipino American Services Group) Bayanihan Center in Los Angeles, California, in the United States. No less than the Philippine Consul General Adel Cruz graced the opening of this show.

Tita Tiinz is debilitated by partial blindness and color blindness, but these perceived disabilities never stopped her from pursuing what she is most passionate about, painting. While she paints more slowly these days, she stays determined to keep on painting as an inspiration to others.

Tiinz is famous for her quirky, fun, and colorful renditions of mother and child paintings, koi fishes, flowers, and modern portraits. She occasionally dabbles in landscapes too. One painting from her mother and child series recently won an orange and purple ribbon which is a special national award from the Anaheim Art Association. Previously, she has reaped several art awards including First Place and Best of Show major awards from Lakewood Art Guild and Cypress Art Guild in California.

Tiinz was born and raised in the Philippines, being the grandchild of HUKBALAHAP leader and revolutionary hero Luis Taruc and the daughter of Dr. Romeo and Teresita Taruc. She studied Tourism at the University of the Philippines where she was a member of the Sigma Alpha Nu Sorority. She was also formerly a beauty queen, fashion and print model, and magazine cover girl in the Philippines.

In the United States, she pursued Graphics Design at the Parsons School of Design and her extensive travels all over the US and Europe has significantly inspired her art. Tiinz is an active member of the Monday Painting Group in Bellflower, California and paints regularly with famous Filipino artists like Kapampangan master Rafael Maniago, Bienvenido Sibug, Magoo Valencia and Cesar DeVera to mention a few. She is based in Los Angeles and a Resident Artist of FASGI, Filipino American Services Group, managed by Director Yey Coronel-Alcid. She has also exhibited her works in the Philippines during her homecomings.

Above all, Tiinz is a mother of three accomplished children Gino Carlo, Tia Katrina, and Jacob Robert. She is a survivor and an advocate of women’s rights and welfare. She considers her paintings as testaments to her strong faith and devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Child Jesus, which figure prominently in her works of art.

“Pananaw ng Puso: Insights of the Heart” will run at the FAGSI (Filipino American Services Group) Bayanihan Center in Los Angeles, California until March 21, 2020. Kudos tita Tiinz, may your generous spirit and creative soul continue to share, love, and inspire.
