EACH of the 482 sidewalk vendors displaced in Cebu City received P5,000 in cash aid from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 7 on Jan. 21, 2020.

A total of P2.4 million was given by the DSWD to the ambulant vendors, who were affected by the demolition conducted by the Cebu City Government’s implementation of its ordinance that regulates sidewalk vending.

The ordinance is in accordance with the Department of the Interior and Local Government Memorandum Circular 2019-121 dated July 29, 2019 that directs local government officials to destroy structures that obstruct the public roads.

Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella and DSWD 7 Director Rebecca Geamala led the distribution of the financial assistance at the DSWD 7 office on M.J. Cuenco Ave. corner General Maxilom Ave. in Barangay Carreta.

Geamala, in her speech, said she was happy to answer the request of the Cebu City Government to give financial assistance to the displaced vendors. (S)
