Cebu’s big men lead b’ball awardees

CEBUANO giants June Mar Fajardo and Greg Slaughter will be feted in the 37th Sportswriters Association of Cebu (SAC)-San Miguel Beer Cebu Sports Awards on Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, at the SM City Cebu Northwing at 2 p.m.

The towering centers will receive a major award as members of the men’s national basketball team that handed the country its 13th straight gold medal and 18th overall in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December last year.

Before the SEA Games, the 6-foot-10 Fajardo of Pinamungajan, Cebu already set history in the first month of 2019 with a record-breaking five straight Season MVP plum in the PBA, the first professional basketball league in Asia.

The Southwestern University (SWU-Phinma) Cobras men’s basketball team, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles high school team, Shaquille Imperial, Leobert Andrew “LA” Casinillo, University of the Visayas SBP team and team Cebu City with players from Abellana National School will all receive citation awards for basketball.

The Cobras made their mark in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) 2019 Season, winning the men’s title over the powerhouse University of the Visayas Green Lancers.

The Magis Eagles, meanwhile, dethroned the University of Cebu in Cesafi’s secondary division.

Imperial of SWU-Phinma was named the collegiate MVP while Casinillo got the high school MVP plum. (POOLED REPORT)
