3 children die in fire

THREE children perished in a fire that razed a house made of light materials in an upland village in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Sur, officials said Thursday.

Police Major Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the fire broke out around 9 a.m. Thursday at Purok Talaba in Camanga Village, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur.

Galvez said did not release the identities of the fatalities except that they consisted of two males aged three and four and a female special child aged eight.

Chief Inspector Dionisio Cayudong, Jr., Pagadian City Fire marshal, said investigation showed the fire started at the kitchen and rapidly engulfed the house of Bimbo Betzusa since it was made of light materials.

Cayudong said an elderly neighbor of Betzusa tried but failed to rescue the three children since the main door of the house was locked.

He said the three children were placed under the care of their eldest brother, who locked the house, and went to his friend in a distant house.

The parents were not around during the incident since the father works as a construction worker in nearby Pagadian City while the mother is an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), he added.

He declared fire out around 9:37 a.m. and placed the estimated damaged to properties at P10,000. (SunStar Zamboanga)
