Female inmate commits suicide inside jail

A FEMALE inmate ended her life inside the comfort room of Maharlika Detention Center in Gumamela Extension, Barangay Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City Thursday, February 27.

The victim was identified as Rhey Ann Antig Talo-on, 27, who allegedly stole P2,352 worth of assorted goods from the Unitop General Merchandise in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City, Monday, February 24.

Talo-on, around 6:45 a.m., was found by the jail guard under the City Mobile Force Company, hanged inside the comfort room of the Maharlika Detention Center’s female facility using her belt tied around her neck and connected to the window grills.

She was rushed to the JR Borja General Hospital for possible revival but she was declared dead on arrival.

According to Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) spokesperson Major Ivan Viñas, depression is the possible reason on why Talo-on committed suicide.

“She was depressed then feeling alone siya, walang tumutulong sa kanya kasi may pending case siya. Feeling napapabayaan at para bang walang nag a-assist sa kanya,” Viñas said.

(She was depressed then she felt alone, no one is helping her because she has a pending case. She felt neglected and it seems like no one is assisting her.)

The case is already filed to the City Prosecutor’s Office. The authorities are waiting for the information and inquest resolution.

Viñas said the post commander has ordered the personnel on duty to check the inmates every hour to prevent another suicide incident.

Cocpo Director Colonel Henry Dampal, for his part, reminded the public to help persons or individuals who show signs of depression to avoid such incident from happening.
