FROM a usual basketball game, the activity turned out to be a more meaningful pursuit for Basketball Wednesday Club composed mainly of Overseas Filipinos Workers based in the United Kingdom.
Through the initiative of Archie Nabus who traces his roots in La Trinidad, Benguet and now based in London the project “Tulong para sa Taal” was created.
At least 215 pounds was raised with the help of the basketball players of the club composed of Filipinos including some other nationalities such as Ecuadorian, and UK citizens who regularly play with them.
The 160 pounds came from the club while 55 pounds was given by other donors who are one in helping the victims of the Taal Volcano eruption in Batangas.
Following the recommendation of their co-basketball player, they have chosen Barangay Apakay in Taal and Barangay Bangin in San Nicholas as beneficiaries.
At least 100 families benefited from the project and personally received toiletries, clothing, food, and water.
“When we learned about the Taal volcanic eruption we know already that we need to help our Kababayans. So, what I did was to ask help from my basketball club, the Wednesday Basketball Club,” Nabus said.
Established in 2006, the Wednesday Basketball Club gathers Filipino basketball enthusiasts in the UK to strengthen their camaraderie, get full-body workout, and discuss ways to help the needy kababayans back home.
Archie with his wife Grace are known for such causes. They are considered as beacons of the Cordillera culture and tradition being advisers also of the group Benguet Organization in UK.
May the culture of caring continue to prevail among us most especially at times when out help is needed.
