KALIBO, Aklan -- The Malasakit Centers scattered all over the country are ready to help Filipinos who may be infected with the new coronavirus that caused the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong' Go said the center has enough funds to help Filipinos in need.

Go was in Kalibo Friday noon, February 28, to spearhead the opening of the Malasakit Center in the province.

Malasakit Center now has 67 local government operated centers all over the country. The 67th is housed at the Dr. Rafael S. Tumbukon Memorial Hospital here.

"My only call is not to discriminate Filipinos who were suspected of Covid-19. We should help them," said Go in an interview.

The Malasakit Center is a one-stop shop where indigent patients can access financial medical assistance from agencies, such as PhilHealth, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Aside from the launching of the Malasakit Center, Go also distributed cash to 17 mayors in the province, including the Aklan Provincial Government, as assistance for victims of Typhoon Ursula that hit the province last December 2019.

The distribution was held at the ABL Sports Complex of the Provincial Capitol.

According to the Department of Health, at least 30 patients have been placed under investigation for the Covid-19 as of February 28. The Philippines only has three positive cases, with one death.

In Aklan, the Provincial Health Office reported that an overseas Filipino worker is being monitored for Covid-19. The person is currently at the provincial quarantine facility at Aklan Training Center in Old Buswang, Kalibo. (SunStar Philippines)
