Y-Speak: Respectfully, traffic

I WAS driving downtown on a regular day and it was sad to see that some drivers can’t follow basic traffic rules.

If you are a holder of a driver’s license, you must have undergone a driver’s seminar at the regulating bodies. However, some may have passed their examinations because they paid to get the license.

It can be observed that the traffic in Davao is becoming worse day by day. One of the reasons for the worsening traffic in the city is the city’s growing population -- more people, more vehicles on the road. We can also observe that there is a growing number of motorcycle owners too because of the convenience a motorcycle brings in getting around the city.

It is sad to see that many car owners lack road manners? Not only private car owners, but drivers of public utility vehicles.

The lack of discipline among drivers has also caused the traffic in Davao City to worsen. For example, drivers to not have to keep on cutting one another when cars are moving. Drivers at intersections should also learn to give way to one another.

There are also drivers who do not respect the pedestrians who are crossing the street using the pedestrian lane. A clear example is drivers suddenly cutting pedestrians who are crossing or those who stop on the pedestrian lanes.

There are still a lot of reasons why traffic gets worse each day. However, one way we can improve this is for drivers, including pedestrians, to properly follow traffic rules. (Karen Bardina, UM intern)
