CIC-Cebu: ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ restaged this March 2020

BACK by popular demand, Colegio de la Inmaculada Concepcion-Cebu (CIC-Cebu) restages “Jesus Christ Superstar” not only to rekindle in hearts the “reason for being” this Lenten Season, but also in joyful anticipation of the 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines.

Roughly based on Gospels from the New Testament of the Bible, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s “Jesus Christ Superstar” has been dazzling audiences for almost 50 years—winning the 2017 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. The musical recounts the story of Jesus in the final days before his Crucifixion through thematic rock-reminiscent song numbers and eclectic ways of portraying biblical characters. The piece is a timeless story told in a modern way, exploring the relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, the disciples and Jesus’ followers.

CIC-Cebu staged the musical in December 2019 for its 140th anniversary with multi-awarded Cebuano Guam-based director Benjie Diola, who has done several plays with the school since the 1980s. Aside from celebrating three milestones (CIC-Cebu’s 140th anniversary, Jesus Christ Superstar’s 50th anniversary, and the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines), the play also aims to use the stage as a medium for societal awareness and spark the flame of appreciation for the arts in the local community.

Among the cast members are students, children, and working adults—with Emmanuel Casquejo as “Jesus,” Dennith Rivera and Roland Empleo as “Judas,” Megan Gabison and Kathleen Adolfo as “Mary Magdalene,” Harry Inoferio as “Herod,” Dr. Shawn Espina and Karl Allanic as “Pilate,” Revan Sinadjan as “Annas,” Emmanuel Garces as “Simon/Peter,” Gerard Gabuya as an “Apostle,” Kimberly Alino as “Lady by the Fire,” Jamaica Lim as “Dancer/Leper,” and (our very own Vice Governor of Cebu) Hilario “Junjun” Davide III as “Caiaphas.” The show will run for two hours and will have live band accompaniment on stage.

“Jesus Christ Superstar” will have a total of six shows: the Matinee on March 12, 13 and 14 at 2 p.m. and the Gala on March 13, 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. all in the CIC Auditorium. For tickets and inquiries, contact the CIC-Cebu Accounting Office at (032) 232 9787 or (032) 232 4629.
