CWR opens Women’s Month, reports plight of women

THE Center for Women’s Resources (CWR), a 37-year research, advocacy and training institution for women, commences the National Women’s Month on Monday, March 2.

A presentation on the situation of Filipino women that highlights the collective struggles and successes of women in fighting for their rights at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

Ulat Lila is CWR’s yearly contribution since 2002 to the commemoration of International Working Women’s Day celebrated on March 8. Since then, CWR reports all the pressing challenges that confront women, analyzing economy and politics that instigate women’s poverty.

In 2020, Ulat Lila put emphasis on the continuing challenges that women, especially those in the marginalized sectors face. It presents body of evidences that mirror the widening inequality and worsening situation of Filipino women in the context of economy, agriculture, labor, and human rights.

“The long standing issues of poverty, landlessness, joblessness, injustice, and inequality remain as long as the government depends on a neoliberal framework that puts value only on benefit and profit of the few and compromises the welfare of people,” CWR executive director Jojo Guan said.

“Four years ago, the women presented the President legitimate demands on change, but these were unheeded. He instead introduced policies that not only exacerbated the poor living conditions of Filipino women, but forthrightly attack them,” Guan added.

Ulat Lila also underlines the unyielding force of women to defend their democratic rights and resist the ruthless attacks of the government.

Women representatives from different sectors, who were at the forefront of their fight against violence, discrimination, injustice, exploitation, foreign intervention and extraction, and repression, were invited at the presentation to link the evidences gathered to the women’s lived experiences on the ground.(PR)
