Velez: We are coronavirus-free for now, but…

ZERO cases in the past three months. Can you imagine that’s the record the Philippines have on cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) for the past three months? We are Covid-19-free. That’s reported. But I still have doubts, knowing how even an election tally could be stalled for seven hours, what more this? It’s head-scratching. Considering the rest of Asia, and the world, is catching the virus that spreads like a fast speed Internet signal. But while there are cases of people dying in Asia, with China and South Korea recording these cases, why are we still alive and germ proof? Not one single case reported from patients monitored in our Southern Philippine Medical Center in Davao. Not one case in Clark New City where 10 Filipinos, which include seafarers who worked in that Japanese cruise ship, tested negative. How did this happen? What is our secret? Is it because our bodies have grown used to dust from so much construction, smog and smoke belching from jeeps and lots of fats and junks that our bodies can say nothing can stop us? Should we promote ourselves as the health capital of the world? Notwithstanding Cuba is the model health system of the world with free health care according to the World Health Organization. We may be relieved no one has gotten sick. But this situation has raised some thoughts. We may not have gotten sick from this virus, but many children still get sick with TB, pneumonia, dengue, and diarrhea. We worry our children are not eating healthy. Jollibee, McDo, 7-Eleven and junk food in the store is just around every corner where they flock out from school. Heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease are the top killers of Pinoys. We blame that on diet of fats and salt, alcohol, and poverty. One needs to survive in these trying times and we just can barely eat three square meals. Good nutrition results to strong minds and bodies, something I doubt we have. While the coronavirus is breaking China’s economy as a manufacturing hub, I wonder how this coronavirus health report makes of us. We have factories closing, and many people lying in public hospitals waiting for something worse than death. Fighting disease such as coronavirus, needs more than keeping hands clean. Politicians should keep their hands out of the budget for social services, from health care to education. This year, the Department of Health’s budget for monitoring disease outbreaks is cut by half from P262.9 million to P115.5 million. That explains my doubts if we really did monitor this Covid-19 well with that small budget. Amidst this half-assuring update that we are coronavirus-free, we need to ask are we a healthy nation?
