PRICES of selected produce in Bangkerohan Public Market dropped from last week at about P5 to P40 per kilogram (kg).

The retail price of red onion fell to P70/kg from P110/kg. The price of garlic at P170/kg from P180/kg; and white onions at P65/kg from P70/kg.

Vegetable vendors said the drop in price was due to the arrival of new batch of produce.

Saidah Mohammadali, a vendor at the Bankerohan Public Market, said prices were high last week because of the rainy weather.

“Taas kay tag ulan maglisud harvest ug baba kay daghan na man pud kaayo,” she said.

(The price was high last week because the rainy weather made it difficult for farmers to harvest but it dropped this week because there is already more supply.)

Meanwhile, ginger and tomatoes retained their prices at P120/kg and P20/kg, respectively.

However, the retail prices of ginger and red onions was higher than its retail prices in December 2019.

Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)’s monitoring of agricultural commodities, the retail price of ginger is at P109.98/kg while the red onion is at P195.68/kg.

But the retail price of white onion is lower in March 2020 compared to its retail price in December 2019. (Danica Mae Ruta, UM intern)
