Tell it to SunStar: 50 days to Earth Day

TUESDAY, March 3, 2020, officially marked the 50-day countdown to the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.

What’s more, we also mark the 200-day countdown to World Cleanup Day set for Sept. 19. Through our joint efforts, both events will serve as an opportunity to unite the cleanup community around our mutual goal of a waste-free world.

Cleanup organizers across the United States and the world are being urged to join the Great Global Cleanup with prominent visibility of their events and organizations on the global cleanup map.

Kathleen Rogers, Earth Day Network president, said “I am thrilled to have the partnership of Let’s Do It World (LDIW) in supporting Earth Day 2020 and The Great Global Cleanup, and I’m excited to see the momentum carry through to World Cleanup Day.”

The waste problem matters to everyone on the planet. We need to solve it together with governments, businesses and communities. In collaboration, we extend the boundaries of what we can achieve and make the necessary positive shifts in society.

We are looking forward to tackling waste problems with Earth Day Network by organizing two huge events together – the Great Global Cleanup and World Cleanup Day.

The LDIW is a global organization uniting more than 180 countries for World Cleanup Day.

The first World Cleanup day was held in September 2018 and it gathered over 17 million people across 157 countries and territories for the biggest waste collection effort in human history.

The second edition, on Sept. 21, 2019, saw more than 21 million people from 180 countries cleaning up trash.

World Cleanup Day harnesses the power of everyday people through cooperation and collaboration, building bridges between disparate communities and all levels of society – from citizens to business, to government. Each country has a leader or a group of leaders who work day and night, often as volunteers, to mobilize people for World Cleanup Day.

Earth Day 2020 comes 50 years after the first Earth Day which, in 1970, mobilized over 20 million citizens to demand action on the environmental challenges of the time. Today, Earth Day is observed in around 190 countries and close to 100,000 organizations.

More than one billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.

For 2020, Earth Day presents the Great Global Cleanup, the most ambitious volunteer event in history with a goal to remove a billion pieces of trash from our parks, beaches, cities, waterways, and wherever waste is found. (By Earth Day Network)
