Cuenco: K-Beauty

FROM “Crash Landing On You” to “Parasite,” many of us have been admiring Korean complexions close-up onscreen. Koreans are known for the 10-step skin care system which includes familiar steps like cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. But what’s all this about applying essence, serum, or ampoule? Do I need to do all of that?

The short answer is no, you don’t. However, I personally feel like my skin looks and feels its best when I add that other step or two. It’s always up to you how much effort you want to devote to your daily habits. I myself make shortcuts when sleep > skin care.

For the curious or those looking for a more specific product to complement their skin regimen, here’s a quick explanation.

Essence

What it is: a lightweight product, less concentrated than serum, that adds moisture to the skin. Most of these have a consistency between water and lotion, and may feel like a super light moisturizer. Essences are sometimes called emulsions.

Apply: after toning, before serum

Serum

What it is: a more concentrated product that packs more active ingredients than essence or moisturizer. Serum consistency is more viscous than essence, but that consistency can still have a range from lightweight to almost oily.

Apply: after toner and /or essence, before ampoule and/or moisturizer

Ampoule

What it is: a high concentration of active ingredients; simply put, a more potent serum.

Apply: After or in place of serum. You can opt to use this only when you feel your skin needs an added boost, or for an extended period of time if there’s a specific skin concern you want to address.
