EMPLOYEE Appreciation Day is an observance celebrated every first Friday of March. While treating one’s employees on that specific day sounds fun, nothing beats long-term plans. In line with this celebration, we’ve asked some of the city’s entrepreneurs on their company’s strategies and initiatives to ensure the betterment of its employees.

Therese “Reese” Marie Borromeo

Aesthetician and proprietor, Beauty Affair Face and Slimming Hub

“Every now and then, I make sure to meet with my beauty therapists to hear them out whether they have sentiments or concerns. I make sure that their work environment is healthy in order for us to deliver our promise to our clients. I sometimes treat them so they know that they are appreciated and valued.”

Dr. Sugar Emily L. Estella-Mantilla and Dr. Andy William F. Mantilla

Aesthetic medicine and laser physicians, Bodyworx Medical Spa

“We believe that our company’s strength is based on mutual respect. We strive to recognize all employees’ efforts, creative ideas and inputs for the betterment of the company. We also inform them if they have done something wrong because we believe in transparency as key to a harmonious atmosphere. We want to make sure that they understand completely the rationale of the different services we are offering to make sure that they are competent. We also send our employees to workshops, trainings and other personality development seminars to hone their skills and be at par with the global standard.”

Carla Marie Adlawan

Director of letters, White Brick Creative Studio

“At White Brick, we treat our employees as partners. Their opinions have a bearing toward the business, our projects and even client relations. Everything is transparent. We let our ‘baby sharks’ initiate and take charge of projects. They have creative freedom and flexibility to work on projects that they like. They also get full company support in their personal endeavors. When one of them has a gig or exhibit, the whole studio is there in full force with banners and confetti canons. We don’t take our line ‘Play. Create.’ lightly. We do the work but have a lot of fun in the process.”

Mia Pamisa

Manager, Terran

“We really try to create a positive work environment for our team where they can learn, have fun and be the best version of themselves. We offer a flexible time off policy as we don’t want our team to stress out if ever they need to take time off for whatever reason they may have. We have monthly one-on-one meetings with all the members of the team, where we just check in with them. We also believe in work-life balance so we have monthly team outings where we take an afternoon off. Sometimes we chill and relax, other times we reach out to the community or build strong bonds through team building. On a regular basis, we make sure that our pantry is full. Somehow, we’re bonded by our great love for food.”

Georgia Felice “Jaja” Chiongbian-Rama

Chief brand cultivator, Bigseed

“We continually invest in our most important resource—our team. We do this through a ‘People Plan’ focused on three pillars. First is Talent Development; conducting regular in-house training programs, deploying for external training and monthly Brunch and Learn sessions. Next, Mentorship; establishing a special six-month Associate Training Program for fresh graduate hires, and performing periodic Coaching and Performance Feedback sessions. Last is Engagement and Flexibility; fostering camaraderie through monthly #BIGseedNightOut sessions, offering flexible hours and the option for remote work and celebrating milestones big and small.”

Maris Holopainen

Director, Qube Gallery

“We have always worked with openness and flexibility. We encourage transparency and open communication within the team. The best part about managing a tight-knit group is that there is a lot of room for flexibility. It isn’t always a strict nine-to-five for our employees and that they are always able to enjoy and be fully present in their life outside work.”
