Severely injured general undergoes blood transfusion

POLICE Major General Jose Maria Victor "Jovic" Ramos underwent a massive blood transfusion within the first 12 hours following the helicopter crash in Laguna.

Ramos, head of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Directorate for Comptrollership, sustained “severe serious injuries” from the crash Thursday morninh, March 5, as he was seated on the left side of the helicopter that slammed to the ground.

As of 7 p.m. Thursday, Unihealth-Southwoods Hospital and Medical Center president Elvis Bedia said Ramos remained under close monitoring at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

His blood pressure has stabilized, but he had lost a huge amount of blood.

“We are continuously monitoring the patient. Since 3 p.m. the patient’s blood pressure is at the range of 120/70 to 120/80, doon naglalaro. Walang episode ng hypotension or decreased blood pressure although ang heart rate n’ya ay mataas still we consider the general to be in a seriuous condition,” he said.

“The blood pressure is now on the normal pero of course may mga resuscitation kaming ginagawa because of the possibility na bumagsak uli ang kanyang blood pressure kasi nga may mga injuries sya na mejo nasustain nya na maraming dugong lumabas so the stabilization of his blood volume is still ongoing. so far ‘yung urine output nya nagkaroon na, yun ang binabantayan namin kanina dahil preferentially ‘yung blood flow n’ya goes to the heart, to the brain at nagsha-shut down yun ng kidney pero at this time maganda na urine output nya at some of the reflexes ay meron na,” he added.

Bedia said they have already transfused five units of blood to Ramos and they expect more transfusions as his blood volume is not yet stabilized.

“May ongoing kami ngayon (na blood transfusion) kasi mejo marami ang dinugo sa maxilo facial fracture na tinamo nya. Nakakahabol naman ng blood transfusion this time,” he said.

Bedia said doctors are not yet advising his transfer to a bigger and better equipped hospital due to his unstable condition. Unihealth is a tertiary hospital in Biñan, Laguna.

He, however, assured that all the doctors needed by Ramos are already on board and ready to respond anytime.

He said only doctors, Ramos’ family, especially his wife, are the only ones allowed to go near him.

Bedia said Ramos has yet to undergo surgery due to the bone fractures he sustained in the face.

“Dapat kasi ready ang patient at dapat he is in a stable optimized condition (when we perform the surgery),” he said. (SunStar Philippines)
