THE answer to the title is located in Mumbai, India. Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants has announced that Masque in Mumbai, India, is the 2020 winner of the prestigious Miele One To Watch Award. The Miele One To Watch title is presented to a restaurant that is outside the Asia’s 50 Best list, but is identified as a rising star of the region.

Launched in 2016, Masque distinguishes itself as the first fine-dining, farm-to-table restaurant to introduce the tasting menu-only concept to India.

William Drew, director of Content at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, says: “Masque represents a new chapter for India’s dining scene. The ingredient-driven menu highlights the diversity and quality of India’s local products while the creative presentation, fresh combinations and radical approach to culinary traditions point to Chef Sadhu’s progressive vision.”

Masque joins a prestigious line-up of recent One To Watch award winners, including Florilège in Tokyo (2016), TocToc in Seoul (2017), Toyo Eatery in Manila (2018) and JL Studio in Taiwan (2019).

Toyo Eatery, which is in Makati and opened by Chef Jordy Navarra and his wife May, has made it to number 43 of this year's 50 Best restaurants. Chef Jordy, who I first met when I wrote about Bo Innovation, the epic restaurant in Hong Kong, created tasting menus ranging from three to 11 dishes, and the restaurant also offers à la carte options. Taking inspiration from various facets of Philippine culture and Philippine cuisine, chef Jordy has elevated the Philippine cuisine in his whimsical and playful twist on Filipino dishes.

The Miele One To Watch will be celebrated as part of the eighth annual Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna. As a result of current travel restrictions in Asia, this year’s event takes the form of a virtual awards ceremony, streaming on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants Facebook page and YouTube channel, starting at 4 p.m. (HK/SG; 5 p.m. JPN) on Tuesday, March 24.

As with the fate of Manila restaurant Toyo eatery who made it to the list of the 50s best after making it as One to Watch Award, it is not unthinkable that Masque in Mumbai might make it to the best of the best next year.

Watch out this space for that.
