City Government to allow trikes on national highways

THE Zamboanga City Government will allow tricycles to pass on national highways for humanitarian consideration, said Councilor Elbert Atilano Sr., chairperson of the City Council's committee on transportation.

This developed despite the directive of the Department of the Interior and Local Government to local chief executives to strictly implement the ban on tricycles, pedicabs, and kuligligs along the national highways.

Atilano said the tricycle operators and drivers have earlier complained of losing their livelihood if they will be banned from passing on the national highways since the roads of the city are inter-connected with the national roads.

Atilano said Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar does not want the tricycle drivers to lose their livelihood.

"We follow the law, but we also consider humanitarian reason," he said.

He said the tricycle task force has already presented to Salazar the tricycle route plan. (SunStar Zamboanga)
