Fernando: Human vs nature

WHETHER the creation and spread of the Covid-19 is a devious plan by the Chinese government (which is unfair to state without a piece of solid evidence) or not, this virus proves that humanity is still at the mercy of Mother Nature.

Humans have the mentality that they are at the top of the creation’s hierarchy and through their intellect and will they think they can subdue all things. It is true that in the eyes of the Creator, we are special. This is the bible’s telling of creation, we were created last to complete the “goodness” of conception and in the end, humans were tasked to be the steward of nature. But alas, as poets write, humans were not that faithful in the stewardship task entrusted to them.

They abuse and exploit mother earth. Forests were burned and the seas were blasted to get resources. Instead of befriending and considering the earth as its greatest ally, humanity with its selfish actuation, unconsciously declared nature as its enemy. So now, like the responses before, because we never learned, nature is again retaliating.

Three months after the world was awakened with the invasion of the Covid-19, humanity with its intellect has not found a cure. We are trying to do something to combat its spread but unfortunately, it is all that we have done and still doing—containing it. Eliminating it—well we have not been successful on that part, meaning humanity is still helpless against this threat. Thousands have fallen, the number of those infected rises in considerable numbers, and more and countries are becoming prey to this predator. The scare has crept in our system. It does not feel like a movie anymore because the scare and threat are real. Truth is, we are not strong enough against nature.

We are not the dominant species in the universe though we’ve been trying to prove this since the beginning. We have learned so much about nature and other living things and organisms but the cosmos is too vast and too deep to understand. Our achievements in the field of science, though immense, is just a slice of the whole knowledge.

This virus is an indication that we have many things to know. We have experienced plagues and epidemics before. The fact that we have overcome them does not entirely prove the greatness of humankind, it can mean that similar things will happen again and it is happening now due to the ignorance and abusive tendency of the people. The effect is not only the loss of lives but on the quality of life. The economy is suffering and the way of life is altering. This tiny virus is grappling us to the ground.

Humanity suffers because people think that the rest of creation is at their disposal. Humans think that the earth is handed to them as a means of survival and actuality. They ignore the natural law. They eat what’s not to be eaten. They distort the natural order of things. They walk to the farthest distance and tread the endless deep all for the sake of knowledge.

Is it wrong to acquire knowledge? No. But trying to become all-knowing is dangerous. We cannot be like God. We cannot know everything. Natural law dictates that not all animals are for consumption. Forbidden exists in this life and out the order in the creation does not make us kings and queens of the universe. Just because we are hungry does not mean that we can eat everything, not humans.

Our enormous advancement in knowledge is proof of our capacity as a creation made in the image and likeness of God. But this does not mean nature is inferior to us. Humans are still no match against the force of nature. Treat nature as an equal. Give her justice. In the end, we are still at the mercy of Mother Nature and our creator.
