City Hall among 50 establishments violating Clean Water Act

CAGAYAN de Oro's City Hall is one of the more than 50 establishments that failed to pass the Clean Water Act due to the lack of wastewater facilities.

Engr. Armen Cuenca, the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro) head, said some hospitals, restaurants, hotels and public markets in the city also violated the Clean Water Act.

"Nakita man gud nato nga ang mga establishments wala gyud silay water treatment facilities sa ilang hotels, restaurants, including public markets, ug naay mga hospitals nga wala," Cuenca said.

(We really saw that some hotels, restaurants, public markets and some hospitals have no water treatment facilities.)

Only around one percent, such as the malls in the city, passed the Clean Water Act.

Under the law, establishments are required to have their wastewater facilities or else they will not be given issued business permits.

"Ang order raba kay kung wala na nga facilities, walay business permit. Mao na ang uban nag-ingon nga 'manira na lang mi.' Wala mi mahimo kung manira mo kay naa may balaod," Cuenca said.

(The order states that if you don't have water treatment facilities, you will not be issued a business permit. That's why some establishments said they will close their business. We cannot do something because that's in the law.)

The Clenro chief said wastewater treatment facilities are important to help prevent pollute the Cagayan de Oro River.

"Aron nga ang ilang madischarge dili makadugang og pollute sa atong suba ug dagat, mao nang sila is required to have a wastewater treatment facility," Cuenca said.

(A wastewater treatment facility is required so that the waste they discharge from their establishments do not further pollute our seas and rivers.)

Representatives of the different establishments in the city were in Mallberry Suites Business Hotel last Tuesday, March 10, to participate in the Wastewater Treatment Technology Forum organized by the Clenro.

The forum talked about the Clean Water Act and other environment requirements as well as the mandatory requirements of tourism-related establishments.

Two wastewater treatment technologies from MBuilt Waste Management Services and the AOP Advanced Clean-Tech Inc. were also introduced to the participating establishments.
