Vicente: Largo Mano

LARGO Mano style in Arnis is probably one of the most used as most encounters starts from a distance, working your way towards an opponent which requires you to solve first the ordeal of closing the distance.

The Largo Mano style requires distance or makes use of the gap that is provided by the stretch of the weapon leaving more space for evasion and a clear view of an incoming attack.

While it is more calculated to strike an opponent in closed quarter, Largo Mano prefers more of the hit and run type which requires development physical aptitude such as speed, strike precision, and footwork mobility, Largo Mano also decreases the occurrence of being easily countered due to distance.

The principle of largo mano is to strike from a distance with one - two blow and maneuver out of the opponents attacking line in order to prevent being countered, thus the need to put a lot of work in developing the physical capabilities to augment the feature of the style and its principle.

Largo Mano’s striking principle, aside from hitting from a distance is hitting the closest target possible from the opponent.

While it is more desirable to hit a vital part of an opponent, hitting the closest target could already incur significant damage that could weaken the guard and focus of the opponent and could open an opportunity to go closer to a medium range or a close range distance which could open an opportunity for a shot of any vital part for the final blow.

In Arnis, the styles and techniques like Largo Mano are not what makes it special but the person who understands it and practice it to perfection.

A technique is useless no matter how brilliant it is coined and developed if it could not be passed and understood to effectivity.

Styles and techniques is just an option and not an absolute preference, making martial arts an art of compatibility of the human body, complimented with a style that the body could showcase.
