Abrigo: Standing tough amidst Covid

DURING the conferment hearing of the Commission on Appointments-Committee on the National Defense, Senator Panfilo Lacson asked the conferee Reservist Colonel Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio on “why do you think he was removed” referring to her ally, the ousted House Committee chair on Appropriation, congressman Isidro Ungab.

There was a moment of complete silence as the attendees were eager to hear from no less than the founding chairman of the Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP). After few seconds of painstakingly clearing a lump in her throat, the committee unexpectedly cracked to her answer: “Sir, I had nothing to do with his removal, Sir.”

That part of question and answer portion before the conferring body between general Lacson and colonel Duterte was like a free trial of a tough and grander presidential debate comes 2022.

It would be a waste of energy for the oppositions to retort against the recent excellent rating of President Rodrigo Duterte. Why? Because the SWS will stand by their pronouncement, that the result was not a knock of head but factual and scientific. By it, PRDD is willing to cross beyond the PSG’s yellow tape of “no touch policy” to the president. He wanted to embrace the people. Because from this people the “excellent” rating emanated -the much coveted rating that he lacked since elementary years until he passed the bar.

While monitoring updates about COVID, flourishing in my newsfeed are varieties of sponsored ads of health and wellness products claiming to kill the coronavirus. The products are made of turmeric, lemon grass, moringa, purple corn, acai berry, grapes, guyabano, stevia, mangosteen, dragon fruit, alingatong, etc. Well, these pods can reinforce the human immune to fortify from viruses if taken regularly. No instant effect as most labels says: “no approved therapeutic claims”.

The country has recorded the first Filipino death by Covid-19. She was the 35th out of 49 confirmed cases as of Wednesday. The same day WHO declared Covid-19 as pandemic due to “alarming levels of inaction”. What does “inaction” mean to the Department of Education? Why can’t the department officially declare a nationwide suspension if not end of classes when many government agencies took breaks and lockdowns, including the senate?

March has barely two weeks left, with highest honors, bravo to DepEd secretary Leonor Magtoles Briones -the last woman standing against Covid-19!
