CHR confirms ‘rebels’ use of IEDs in Guihulngan ambush

THE Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in Negros Oriental has confirmed the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) during an ambush attempt in Barangay Luz, Guihulngan, Negros Oriental last week.

CHR-Negros Oriental head, Dr. Jess Cañete, said this is based on the investigation they conducted in the area where the ambush took place and it was confirmed that the rebels did use an IED.

It is a violation of human rights, he said.

Cañete pointed out by using IEDs, the rebels also put the lives of innocent civilians, who are also traversing the same road at risk.

He explained the use of IEDs is prohibited as it violates the Comprehensive Agreement on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law; and also violated an agreement made by the Philippine government and the NPA’s political wing, the National Democratic Front.

The CHR official added they are trying to get in touch with the rebels over the issue, and they are hoping for a reply soon. (TDE)
