Covid-19 hits more games

ALL games of the Davao City Prisaa Meet 2020 were postponed while two other basketball events also suspended their programs after the nationwide state of public health emergency was declared, raising the Code Red Sublevel 2 status in the country, and guidelines set by the city government of Davao amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lourdes Mission, secretary of Davao City Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) president Ma. Lita Montalban, bared to SunStar Davao via Facebook yesterday that remaining games of the city eliminations for the Davao Regional Prisaa Meet will be suspended.

She said they will resume the games once the Covid-19 crisis gets stable and all prohibitions on mass gathering like sporting events get lifted by the city and national governments.

Meanwhile, organizers of the Gaisano Grand Cup Season 17, the longest-running youth cagefest in Mindanao, also suspended matches.

On the GG Cup Season 17 Facebook page, the GG Cup Board of Commissioners posted, "The resumption of GG Cup Season 17 will soon be determined by first week of April 2020."

Gaisano Grand Citimall store operations manager Maria Luz Seit, in an announcement on the same event page, said they regret to inform GG Cup participants that all remaining games of the league are temporarily suspended.

"The safety and welfare of our athletes against Covid-19 is our main priority," she said.

Meanwhile, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) 11 operations head Ronel Leuterio posted the March 12 memorandum of SBP director of operations Butch Antonio to all regional directors, including SBP Davao region director Glenn Escandor.

Antonio said the SBP Referees Academy Clinics 2020 "have been deferred indefinitely", saying that SBP takes the safety and welfare of all participants, SBP clinicians and other staff as main priority.

He added, "Be guided that once this health concern improves and the respective government agencies give their clearance, we will review all options and see if we can continue our program for this year."

It can be recalled that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio also cancelled all events of the 83rd Araw ng Dabaw, thus, the annual Araw ng Dabaw sports festival was also shelved this year.

The 3rd Alveo Ironman 70.3, which was earlier scheduled on March 22, was postponed to May 22 while the Philippine Collegiate Champions League National Finals set in Davao City was moved to a still undetermined date.

PSC Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez also issued a memorandum that all PSC programs, including those being undertaken by PSC Mindanao office in Davao City and other regions in Mindanao will all have to be postponed.
