BBEAL suspends volleyball tilt, other games

TAKING cue from other collegiate and professional sports league, the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL) has suspended the remaining scheduled games in the on – going volleyball tournament.

Eduardo Laureano, over-all commissioner of the BBEAL season 33 of host Cordillera Career Development College in La Trinidad, Benguet announced the suspension of the remaining games of the competition Thursday afternoon.

“In view of the recent development on the Covid – 19 outbreak in the Philippines, it is with deep regret that the BBEAL will have an indefinite suspension for the 33rd BBEAL Volleyball Tournament and other events until further notice,” Laureano in his memo sent to all school members of the league.

Members of the BBEAL are the Baguio Central University, Baguio College of Technology, Benguet State University, Philippine Military Academy, Pines City Colleges, Saint Louis University, University of Baguio, University of the Cordilleras and the University of the Philippines – Baguio. Taking a leave of absence for this year is Kings College of the Philippines.

Only four play dates, including the March 13 schedule, remain in the scheduled volleyball tournament prior to the indefinite suspension.

The last date for the elimination is scheduled March 18.

“The safety and well – being of our student – athletes, coaches, and officials is our top most priority and will take precautionary measures to ensure its implementation,” added Laureano.

Other sports events in the BBEAL for the second semester were not scheduled due to the Covid-19 scare.

Laureano earlier told sports scribes they were having problems on venue due to the cancellation of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (Caraa).

Caraa was supposed to be staged Feb. 16 until 21 but was moved to March 22 after the city government ordered crowd-drawing events to be moved to another date, right before the supposed opening of the Baguio Flower Festival.

However, the flower festival was already cancelled while Caraa is once again moved for the third time following a memorandum coming from the Department of Education.

UC is the defending men’s volleyball champion, while BCT, the smallest member of the league, earned its first title in women’s volleyball last year. Roderick Osis
