PATIENT 40, a 54-year-old man confined at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), has died, the Department of Health announced Saturday, March 14.

In a statement, the agency said the patient died Friday evening, March 13, of acute respiratory distress syndrome due to severe pneumonia with concomitant acute kidney injury.

This brought the Covid-19 death toll in the Philippines to six.

PH40, a Filipino, had no known recent travel history abroad.

He had lived in Pasig City since 2017 and had gone to Iligan City to undergo treatment for his illness.

He was admitted in a hospital in Iligan City on March 3 for pneumonia and referred to the NMMC, provincial government hospital in Misamis Oriental, on March 8.

Nasopharyngeal and other specimens were taken from him and sent to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).

Test results on March 11 were positive for the novel coronavirus, which has been given the name Sars-CoV-2 by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.

This pathogen causes Covid-19, a respiratory disease that could be fatal.

PH40 had been confined in an isolation room in the NMMC and was reported to be in critical condition. Officials reported Friday that his condition had deteriorated.
