Sultan heads to Africa for title fight

DESPITE the coronavirus pandemic that has instillled fear all over the world, Jonas Sultan will still brave into enemy territory in the hope of getting back into title contention.

Sultan is up against unbeaten South African prospect Ricardo Malajika in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) Inter-Continental super flyweight belt at Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, Guateng, South Africa on March 21, 2020.

“The fight is a go,” ALA Gym head trainer Edito Villamor told SunStar Cebu, adding the team left on March 14, 2020.

The 28-year-old Sultan, a one-time world title challenger, and his trainer Edmund Villamor had a brief stop in Singapore.

A lot of events have been cancelled or postponed due to the spread of the coronavirus globally, which includes boxing events and most notably the NBA.

“We advised them to be extra careful. Wear a mask and always clean their hands,” said Edito.

After a loss to Athenkosi Dumezweni in 2019 and a seven-month inactivity, Sultan dropped out of the world rankings. Sultan is 16-5 with 10 knockouts, while Malajika is 6-0 with five knockouts. / EKA
