Wounded soldiers get financial aid, gift package

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has provided cash assistance and other gift package to 18 soldiers who were wounded in recent clashes against the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Maguindanao.

Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom), on Saturday handed over the cash assistance and gift package to the recipient-soldiers at the headquarters of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division in Maguindanao on behalf of General Felimon Santos, AFP chief-of-staff.

The gift packages included gun certificates and cellular phones.

“We should take care of our soldiers, because those left behind can have no peace after suffering distress,” Sobejana said.

Sobejana was accompanied during the simple awarding rites by Major General Diosdado Careon, Army’s 6th Infantry Division command and the Presidential Management Staff.

The Joint Task Force Central has recently mounted offensives against the Daesh-inspired BIFF in Maguindanao.

The Westmincom chief earlier said acting on reports received from the communities, operating troops utilized air and artillery assets to bombard the BIFF lairs in the the village of Salman, Ampatuan, Maguindanao.

Sobejana added that armed confrontations ensued between the military troops and the BIFFs in the towns of Ampatuan and Hoffer, Maguindanao.

The artillery bombardment and clashes resulted to the death of 14 BIFFs, he said.

On Friday, the troops have recovered three remains bringing to 17 fighters the BIFF have lost since the start of the offensive. (SunStar Zamboanga)
