AMID the commotion brought about by the global Covid-19 pandemic, the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) is elated after several volunteers donated medical supplies and Fat Cow Restaurant offered food for the frontline workers of the hospital.

Frontline health care workers were the most vulnerable in the wake of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic as they are now considered as the soldiers in the war against the virus.

Dr. Ricardo Audan, Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) Chief of Clinics and Health Emergency Management Bureau (HEMB) coordinator, earlier said their supply of essential medical items is starting to diminish which put the medical professionals at risk.

He said right after announcing that they almost run out of supply they were beginning to receive donations such as masks, gloves, and other essential medical supplies in their hospital as well as food for their frontline healthcare workers.

Audan said the noble deed of generous individuals motivated them to do their work to address the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“Alam nila ‘yong hirap din namin dito sa SPMC. In a small way makahatag og motivation nga maganahan mi og work for the love of the people (They know the struggles we are facing here at SPMC. In a small way, this motivates us to work harder for the love of the people),” he said.

He added that the Department of Health (DOH) vowed to replenish their supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure the safety of its personnel against the dreaded virus.

He said their hospital personnel are starting to fear the effect of coronavirus following reports in other countries where some frontline workers died after contracting the disease while treating Covid-19 patients.

With this, a debriefing will soon be conducted to all their medical professionals.

At present, they have around 900 healthcare workers in SPMC.

To ensure their mental health, Audan said they activated their psychosocial team composed of psychologists, psychiatrists, and others for the debriefing of their frontline workers.
