Sanchez: Selflessness rather than greed

I PROBABLY am the most responsible citizen in this time of the Covid-19 crisis. Because of my recuperation from a stroke, I accepted willingly a self-imposed lockdown. As if I have a choice.

I’m not in position to go out and leave, exercise a bit, read and listen to my cellphone, monitor, even get bored to the news of the Covid-19 which are featured all over the place.

Now Italy has replaced China as the epicenter in Europe, that classes are closing down, that there is panic buying, that there is a danger of global recession.

Thanks to the internet and smartphone, I am kept up-to-date with warnings from government advisories. My colleague mediator Crispin Chua said that the Supreme Court declared no work beginning Friday to March 18.

I appreciate that Crispin is updating me. Thank you for remembering me. Although I have access with the internet that I can keep abreast with developments in Bacolod and nationwide and even global.

Then there’s Dr. Christer Marie Taclobos, my student last year for the Prayer and Life Workshop (PLW). PLW is a school of prayer where it encounters life. I keep in touch with them through social media. As a government physician, Dr. Taclobos’ responsibility is to issue advisories.

Here’s one.

Challenge: Let’s start social distancing today!

Avoid heavily populated areas like the malls and its grocery store.

Refrain from holding hands.

Drink lots of water and stay healthy.

Wash your hands with soap and running water.

Take this opportunity to rest, reflect and pray for our world.

Who’s with me?

Dr. Taclobos is a sister in Christ at The Feast where hugs are common. I suppose it will become rarer than a hen’s teeth.

Then here’s another one from Dr. Taclobos.

Hello friends!

I know some of you are scared and are panic-buying on some medical supplies.

But if you're too scared, please stay at home and avoid exposure.

Leave some masks, alcohols, tissues and thermal scanners to us, medical professionals, who are at the frontline of this disease.

We are humans too and we also have the risk of having the infection. We need to be equipped because we are exposed not only to this virus, but as well as to other infections – whether bacterial, tuberculous, and/or nosocomial in origin.

Let's look out not only for ourselves. Let's look out for each other. Selflessness rather than greed.
