Meditalk: What is EQ?

Meditalk: What is EQ?

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Good day to you. There are advertisements that I have heard about EQ. Honestly, I don't know what is EQ. How does it differ from IQ? What does it mean if you have high EQ? Does having a high EQ make you any better than the rest?

Thanks for your reply.

Dear Saunders Smith,

EQ means Emotional Quotient or emotional intelligence. It refers to the ability to work effectively with emotions. People who have high emotional intelligence tend to have more satisfying personal and professional relationships and greater levels of psychological well-being.

IQ or Intelligence Quotient, on the other hand is used to determine academic abilities and identify individuals with off-the-chart intelligence or mental challenges. This is the ability to learn, understand and apply information to skills, logical reasoning, word comprehension, math skills, abstract and spatial thinking and filter irrelevant information.

EQ is being able to identify, evaluate, control and express one's own emotions; perceive, and assess others' emotions. They use emotions to facilitate thinking, understand emotional meanings. Thus, a high EQ is a better indicator of success in the workplace and is used to identify leaders, good team players, and people who can best work by themselves.

IQ is predicting success with academic achievements, and has been used to determine career options for graduating students. But, when you graduate, some companies require EQ tests during the hiring process, as studies have shown that people with high EQ generally achieve more, excel at teamwork and service and take more initiative.

So, in my own perspective, EQ is the heart and IQ is the brains. One cannot survive without the other. To be good, you can have either of the two. But, to be great, you have to have both.

Good luck!
