IN THE ‘80s, the Women in Travel group awarded Ingrid Santamaria, Nelia Neri, Jo Magsaysay and Flor Ynclino as Women of Distinction. It also awarded then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court as Man of Distinction.

In the early 2000s, Speechcom International—in coordination with the Academe and Zonta Club of Cebu 1—started the annual commendation of Talento Cebuanos. This year, March 8—in celebration of March as the special month for Women—Talento Cebuano launched “Women of Worth.” Through the PR Information team of Zonta Club of Cebu 1, the Academe and the different barangays, the success stories of women from all walks of life were shared to serve as initiatives for leadership and achievements.

The first awardee, Amelia Langomez Vergara, is a school teacher from the University of San Carlos. She rose from a household assistant to the Espina family, to a Basic Education teacher of the University of San Carlos, then a Private Education Assistance Committee national trainer in English, then Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. coordinator. Her roles as wife, mother and teacher are worthy of emulation. Married to a loving husband, with four children, Amy fought and worked hard to attend to her sickly children, and succeeded with her fortitude and faith in the Lord. As a mentor, she is committed to molding her students, specifically young women leaders, with the right conduct and values.

Zonta 1 Rose Awardees

The Zonta Club of Cebu 1, in celebration of Women’s Month, awarded this year’s Rose Awardees—Zontians who served the club for decades of advocacy and service, and became national and international leaders, helping the community with their professional expertise.

Bougainvillea showcase

Ayala Center Cebu became the “garden of colorful flora,” when the Bougainvillea Cebu Garden Club, led by president Jun Muntuerto, had a display of beautiful bouganvillea, a handicraft of the Lord’s creation. It was a beautiful sight to behold! I remember our house in Biñan, Laguna where we had red, white and pink bougainvilleas in our vast yard. There was a time when the road leading to Mactan bridge had these flowers enroute to the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Celebrations

Ingrid Sala Santamaria is a Woman of Distinction who has not lost the glitter of her ultimate skills in the arts and music. She just had a successful concert at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

To demonstrate that men and women could work in harmony and share common visions, the Zonta Club of Cebu 1 acknowledged the leadership of Jun Muntuerto to preserve and beautify our environs through the Bougainvillea Extravaganza.

An example of a self-made young professional is Robby Alugar, who rose from very basic odd jobs, to a challenging position in Global Carrier, then a Talento Cebuano awardee. Robby, a Zonta Club of Cebu 1 and 2 supporter, celebrated the first anniversary of RMA news and PR outfit. Congratulations! Keep your feet on the ground, Robby, as you soar higher in your career!
