Samante: Cancelled

Samante: Cancelled

THE Covid-19 health scare has forced everyone into their homes. Observance of social distancing and quarantine is being practiced all over the world. It is encouraged to prevent the unwilling spread of the virus to everyone.

While the whole world is on the lookout for containing the virus and stop it, it also took its toll on various sporting events locally and worldwide. The first canceled event was the regional Davraa Meet. It was supposed to be conducted April 1-7 in Davao de Oro. Still, Deped was very eager to protect everyone involved that it has already postponed its conduct. Therefore, jeopardizing participation in the Palarong Pambansa. Host Marikina City has already begged from its hosting responsibilities.

In light of the Covid-19 situation, I cannot see other LGUs willing to risk hosting at this moment. Several local leagues in the city also had to postpone their remaining games in favor of everyone’s health and safety.

The MPBL, Uaap, and Ncaa have also postponed scheduled games. Even the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), which just opened the season, was forced to delay until the situation becomes better.

International sporting events also got canceled or suspended. The National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (MHL), suspended the season.

Major League Baseball (MLB), UEFA Champions League, and Bundes Liga postponed their games. The U.S. Ncaa has also canceled. It is a significant setback for players and sports fans around the world. Many would wish that what hit NBA players, Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, were just some aliens. Getting their basketball skills to face-off, against Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan in Space Jam. Or for comics aficionados, this is nothing like the Legacy Virus, which affected the mutants and humans.

In light of all of these things, we come to realize that we can all be afflicted with the disease. From athletes, government leaders, Hollywood personalities, and us, ordinary people, no one is safe from this virus. What will keep us safe is to heed the appeal of government and health professionals to keep clean, maintain a safe distance, and quarantine when symptoms of the disease manifest. There will be no Michael Jordan to beat the aliens or an X-men to sacrifice themselves to prevent the spread of the virus. It needs our collective efforts to overcome the illness. Cooperation and genuine concern for each other’s’ safety and well-being or else, we all get canceled.
