THREE schools in Metro Cebu will soon have science laboratories with the help of Vivant Foundation.

Vivant Foundation, the corporate social responsibility arm of publicly listed Cebuano firm Vivant Corp., has committed a total of P3 million to convert one classroom each at Mabolo National High School, Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School and Mandaue City Science High School so that students will have well-equipped science laboratories.

The retrofitting, which will cost P1 million per school, falls under Vivant Foundation’s Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education support program.

Vivant Foundation is also allotting P1 million to enhance the Electrical Installation and Maintenance (EIM) technical-vocational track of Cordova National High School.

The assistance is under Vivant’s Project Liadlaw and will enable the school to teach an enhanced EIM curriculum that incorporates solar technology. Under the assistance, Vivant will donate tools and equipment that will be used to teach EIM-solar.

“Our Stem support program and Project Liadlaw are part of our commitment to uplift public education and equip our youth with the knowledge and skills that would enable them to develop solutions for a world that is constantly changing,” said Vivant Foundation executive director Shem Jose Garcia.

Stem program

Under its Stem support program, Vivant Foundation establishes science laboratories or donates science laboratory tools and equipment—or sometimes both. It also supports the Regional Science and Technology Fair (RSTF) in Central Visayas and provides scholarship to RSTF participants who want to pursue Stem-related college degrees.

Project Liadlaw, on the other hand, involves upgrading the EIM tech-voc track in selected public senior high schools so that graduates will have the capability to install and maintain solar power systems, in addition to conventional electrical systems. The other component of Liadlaw involves solar electrification of remote off-grid schools, which will provide EIM-solar students hands-on training.

Vivant Foundation signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the officials of Mabolo National High School, Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School, Mandaue City Science High School and Cordova National High School on March 5, 2020.

During the MOA signing, Mabolo National High School Principal Rosemarie Novabos said most public schools had a hard time implementing senior high school because they lacked facilities and equipment.

We had a hard time finding stakeholders who would support us. So we are very grateful to Vivant for choosing us as a beneficiary of their Stem support program,” she said.

The retrofitted science laboratories in Mabolo National High School, Mandaue City Comprehensive National High School and Mandaue City Science High School are expected to be turned over shortly before the start of school year 2020-2021.

The EIM-solar assistance to Cordova National High School will be turned over in June to benefit enrollees for school year 2020-2021. S
